Our CRAQ colleagues, members of the CHIME team, receive the Brockhouse Canada 2022 Award
CHIME is a large, fixed radio telescope with a large collection area, wide bandwidth, and a huge instantaneous field of view (about 200 square degrees, equivalent to the area covered by more than 1000 times the size of the full moon). The CHIME project involves more than fifty scientists and is co-led by the University of British Columbia, McGill University, the University of Toronto, and is hosted at the National Research Council’s Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory, with collaborating institutions in the United States and elsewhere.
The CHIME team received the Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering, which comes with a $250,000 award.
The prize citation reads: “Together, this powerful collaboration of experts has designed and built one of the most novel and extraordinarily powerful radio telescopes in the world. Unlike traditional telescopes that mechanically point to and observe a small region of the sky, this revolutionary technology forms an image of the entire overhead sky each day by digitally processing the information received on a compact array of 2048 radio receivers as the Earth rotates.”
The CRAQ warmly congratulates all our McGill colleagues from the CHIME team for this prestigious award.
