Professor Laurent Drissen is one of the first recipients of the new PRISME program from the FRQNT and the FRQSC

In January 2021, the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT) and the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture (FRQSC) launched a new interdisciplinary program called PRISME. This program invites research teams to make the sciences and the arts interact through a project carried out jointly by two researchers from each of the sectors covered by the Funds.

Université Laval professors Laurent Drissen, member of the Center for Research in Astrophysics of Quebec (CRAQ), and Rafael Zaldivar, as well as researcher Thomas Martin (CRAQ), are among the first four teams to receive a grant of $ 50,000 annually for a period of two years.

Their proposal “Interferences: Whispers of a Supernova” aims to present a new way of approaching the observational data of the Crab nebula, obtained by the SITELLE instrument at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. This nebula results from the explosion of a massive star, observed on July 5, 1054.

Laurent Drissen, Rafael Zaldivar and Thomas Martin propose a fine articulation between authentic graphic and sound sources coming from their respective communities. This work will reflect the poetic power that can arise from the meeting between these points of view and their joint wonder at the spectacle of the cosmos, while establishing an equitable representation between traditional and scientific knowledge.
