Research field: Massive stars; hyperspectral imagery.
Description of the research project:
Laurent Drissen is an expert on massive stars. For the past fifteen years, he has been working on the development of imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometers (iFTS), instruments able to obtain the spectrum of each light source in a field of view of 11 arcminutes in selected wavelength ranges in the optical. With the help of numerous students and collaborators in the industry (in particular ABB-Bomem of Quebec), he led the design and construction of SpIOMM for the Observatoire du Mont-Mégantic. More recently, he oversaw the development of SITELLE, an instrument similar to SpIOMM, which is now installed at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Thanks to SITELLE, Drissen and his colleagues are studying the ionized gas nebulae of the Milky Way, nearby spiral galaxies and distant clusters of galaxies. Laurent Drissen is also active in the field of scientific outreach; he was a regular columnist for the CBC's "Les années lumière" radio show. He is currently (2017 - 2018) Associate Professor at the University of Hawaii in Hilo.
