Since the pioneering work of Per Bak, self-organized criticality is considered one of the plausible mechanisms generating complexity in the Universe. I will briefly present key points of Bak's theory; namely power laws, avalanche phenomena, pink noise and fractal geometry - and show how these permeate the world we live in. My presentation will constitute a prelude to my colleague Christian Thibeault's poster presentation on avalanche models of solar flares.
