The solar dynamo: changing views

Manfred Schüssler (MPS Göttingen)

Solar dynamo theory and models have gone a long way since Cowling's theorem, Parker's loop, and Babcock's scenario. Yet we are still lacking a comprehensive and predictive theory. Observations and also 3D-MHD simulations have more than once undermined seemingly well-established concepts and models. Sometimes, the development even took a full turn and previouly dismissed ideas enjoyed a revival. This talk will start with a brief history of solar dynamo concepts and then describe the challenges that the "current paradigm" is facing. The rejuvinated Babcock-Leighton model and the lessons learned from 3D-MHD simulations will be discussed. Finally, we shall take a glance at what models have to say about the long-term evolution of solar activity.

Mode of presentation: oral (Need to be confirmed by the SOC)
